STRESS & THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

Many factors within the nervous system can disrupt clear thinking, especially when the autonomic nervous system is activated. This system governs the body’s automatic responses to stress, including the well-known fight, flight, or freeze reactions.

During these stress responses, the body instinctively increases heart rate, breathing, and releases hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. These chemicals are essential for short-term adaptation, helping us respond quickly to perceived threats. However, when the body remains stuck in this stress state, elevated levels of these hormones can become harmful over time.

Chronic stress can dysregulate nearly every system in the body, weakening the immune response and making us more vulnerable to illness.
